Rogers County, named after Clem Vann Rogers who was a Cherokee rancher, is in the north east of Oklahoma and has a population bordering on 88,000. It is the home of the Will Rogers Downs racetrack, now operated by Cherokee Nation, which first opened it gates in August 1987. However, things did not go according to plan, crowds decreased and facilities declined until the track ceased racing in 2001. Sensing a change in the gambling laws in the State the Cherokee Nation purchased the dilapidated track and facilities in 2004, and had reopened it by 2005. The track is now dual purpose, hosting quarter horse races from September to November, but also offers a thoroughbred programme from March to May. The 8 furlong oval track boasts a 2700 seater grandstand and has a number of top grade races, including the Clem McSpadden Memorial Route 66 Stakes, the Will Rogers Derby and the Sequoyah Stakes.
